Among the latest requests for rescues, Heavenly Horse Haven was contacted by Carl Long, a local long time resident of Anza. Six years ago he and his wife rescued a herd of wild mustangs from being slaughtered. They have been caring for them on their ranch since they took them in, however due to the slowing economy and Carl’s real estate business slowing, they can no longer afford to pay for their upkeep.
In speaking with Carl, he explained to us that the mustangs were running wild in Anza and that one or two of them had lost their lives due to accidents. At the time, the Brand Inspector made a

decision to move the mustangs out of the area, however it was learned that they would most likely face slaughter when they left. Carl couldn’t stand by and let this happen so he and his wife made the decision to ask the BLM for permission to keep them on their large property where they could still run free. The Living Free/BLM agreed to this and they were moved to Carl’s property where they have remained, free from harm.
The mustang’s are still considered wild, however they have over the
years become accustomed to the human touch and presence. They no longer feed off the land and must now be fed as any other horse would. The cost for this is no small feat, and in these hard times Carl and his wife can no longer manage to keep them.
They called Heavenly Horse Haven asking for help, but due to the size of our facility we can not take on the nine horses. So instead of turning our backs on these beautiful horses, we have chosen to help them adopt the horses out so that they can continue to thrive. Ideally we would like to see the herd stay together, so anyone with a large open space that is willing to take them all would be ideal.
Most of their ages are unknown with a few of them being born within the time frame that Carl has had them.
Our goal is to help preserve the life of as many horses as possible, even when we can’t take them ourselves. We thank you for your help.
